Top quota holders in Iceland - Happy new fishing year!

What’s going on here?

The new quota year in Iceland started 4 days ago and we at SDC have already looked back over the year and recounted in last friday's market watch. Now the focus shifts to the discussion on changes among the top quota holders. As always there have been some shifts in the quota holdings for the main species. In the table above we see the ranking and quota holdings of the top 25 companies in Iceland for the Atlantic cod, Haddock and Saithe in tons of gutted weight.

What does this mean?

Similar to previous year the top 25 companies hold in excess of 60% of total Atlantic cod holdings and even higher percentages for Haddock and Saithe. On top of that there has been some consolidation of ownership in recent months among some of these top companies which means that the trend towards further consolidation of ownership continues.

Why should I care?

For you, personally:

The TAC for these three species have increased each quota year since 2015 and the supply from Iceland is therefore increasing while there has been a decrease in Atlantic cod quota in the Barents sea which effects the total supply and can give Icelandic companies an oppurtunity to better position themselfs in the market.

The bigger picture:

The key for success in the new quota year is not only how well the companies can streamline their operations or how much of their quota they will catch in the new year - it is how successful the companies will be able to position themselves in the market and the focus on increasing the value of their products and for their customers. That is where the companies have the chance to find their own competitive niche in the market.
