TAC groundfish increases foreseen for Iceland

The TAC outlook for the Icelandic cod and haddock looks promising. The recommendations of the MRI for the quota year 2018/2018 are that the TAC for the Atlantic cod will not exceed 264.437 MT (an increase of 3% from the current quota year). This is based on that the cod spawning population has been increasing and the is the largest in the last 50 years. The primary reason for the increase in the spawning population is reduction in the catch ratio.

The MRI also recommends that the haddock catch will be no more than 57.982 MT (an increase of 40% from the current quota year).

The outlook for redfish (sebastes marinus) is bleak as the recommended catch for the next quota year is 43.600 MT (a reduction of 14% from the current quota year).

Given that the Minister of Fisheries has followed the MRI's recommendations in the recent years we assume that the TAC issued will be in line with these recommendations.
