Is there an underlying change in store for salted and dried products to the Portuguese market?

For decades Portugal has been the key market for salted and dried Atlantic cod products from Norway, primarily dried clipfish and salted splitted. Even though Portugal has not been the most important market for Iceland it has nevertheless been an important market for salted splitted Atlantic cod. When looking at this year's developments there seems to be a slight change in the market with decreasing export volumes and price increases. As seen in the table below the volumes exports for the above mentioned products to Portugal have decresed by more than 11% for the first nine months of 2017 (MT) compared to the same nine-month period in 2016 (MT LY).

When  we compare the exports of dried clipfish from Norway by months for 2016 and 2017 we see that the volumes significantly lower this year.

The same seems to be the case for salted splitted from Norway as well.

The export volume trend to Portugal for salted splitted from Iceland shows similar trend as for the exports from Norway.

It will be interesting to follow these market developments and analyze if this is only a temporary trend or if this is the start of the shift in the Portuguese market. Meanwhile, follow our analysis on markofish.com. For further information contact us at info@markofish.com.
