Atlantic salmon breaks the 80 NOK barrier
Prices for Atlantic salmon keep on rising and are now over 80 NOK per kilo on the spot market in Norway. Around last new year this price was around 53 NOK so the price hike is about 50% in the last four months.
In a recent article in Undercurrent News by Neil Ramsden a source said that there was nothing to have under £7,5 per kilo on the market for Norwegian and Scottish salmon in the UK. Two sources…"were concerned at the level of the price rise, with the latter stating it was getting harder and harder to absorb on behalf of customers."
A surge in supply in the last half of 2017 led most experts to think that after new year the price of Atlantic salmon would go down in the first months of the year. This only happened briefly at the start of the year.
In a FAO report issued in mars of this year it was stated that the increase in production of 8-10% forecast for 2018 could well have a more pronounced and sustained effect on prices than previously expected, that is prices would go down. This has not happend as new markets for Atlantic salmon, i.e. in Eastern Europe and Asia have absorbed the increased supply and kept the price as high as it is.
