Atlantic cod quotas in Iceland to be increased in 2018/19?
The Marine Research Institute in Iceland has published its preliminary results from the fall survey. According to the results the overall stock index for Atlantic cod and Golden redfish (Sebastes marinus) was the highest since the beginning of the fall surveys in 1996. Over the last ten years there has been rapid growth in the Atlantic cod stock and now it is twice as high as in 2010/11. The rise primarily due to increased levels of large cod over the past years.
Even though that the fall surey by itself does not mean that the TAC for Atlantic cod in Icelandic waters will be increased there are strong indications that we are likely to see a quota increase for the 2018/19 quota year. The Seafood Intelligence team has estimated what this quota increase could possibly be in 2018/19 and 2019/20 as shown in the graph below. It should be noted that this is a preliminary estimate and is subject to change. However, the outlook for Atlantic cod catch in Icelandic water looks very promising for the next years.
