Atlantic cod Barents sea TAC cuts advised by ICES while MRI advises TAC increases in Iceland
ICES has issued several recommendations concerning the proposed TAC for 2018 last Tuesday. The Scientists with ICES advised that Barents sea TAC in 2018 should be set at 712.000 MT. Last year´s TAC at the Barents sea was 890.000 MT which represents a 20% drop.
This is the fifth year in a row where they recommend a reduction after the TAC for Atlantic Cod in the Barents sea peaked at 1.000.000 MT in 2013. However, these recommendations aren’t always followed specifically. In October the Russian–Norwegian Fisheries Commission will meet up to decide the actual TAC in the Barents sea for 2018.
ICES also advised that Iceland’s Atlantic Cod TAC would increase by 5,56% which would lead to a 13.000 MT increase in Iceland. The Marine Research Institute in Iceland has also just released their recommendations for the 2016/2017 Atlantic Cod quota and more quotas in Iceland. What stands out in their advise is:
- MRI advises a increase of 13.500 MT in the Cod TAC, from 244.000 MT to 257.572 MT which is a 6% increase.
- MRI advises a 20% increase in the Haddock TAC which results in a 41.390 MT quota.
- MRI advises 10% increase in the Saithe TAC which is a increase from 55.000 MT to 60.237 MT.
We will take a closer look at the MRI advise in next weeks newsletter. Stay tuned for more analysis on markofish.com. For further information contact us at info@markofish.com.
